We saw Seussical the Musical for the second time today! It was even better than we remembered!
The first time we saw the musical, the kids really enjoyed discovering the story as it unfolds and listening to the music, but I felt that we were missing the full experience as we were unfamiliar with Suess’“Horton Hears A Who”.
Today, having read the book and watched the movie, the kids and I were able to enjoy the musical 100% as we knew the story and were able to fully appreciate the spectacular compilation of whimsical elements, characters and delightful verses from Dr. Seuss classics ofHorton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham andThe Cat in the Hat.
“I meant what I said and I said what I meant.”~ Dr. Seuss, Horton Hatches the Egg
Even though he was just the zany narrator who peppers the musical with his endless tricks and witty, thought-provoking commentary,The Cat in the Hatwas THE Star of the show and stole the limelight whenever he was onstage.
What is Seussical the Musical?
The 75 minutes long musical (with no breaks) is about the famous Seuss character Horton the Elephant and his stories in Horton Hears A Who and Horton Hatches The Egg with narration and quotes from The Cat In The Hat and Green Eggs And Ham
Horton discovers a small world floating by on a tiny speck of dust. This small world is floating out of control through the universe and is the home of the Whos, including Jojo – a Who with “Things” that defy all description.
In an unsurprising turn of events (remember this is a Dr. Seuss story, anything unusual is normal in this world), Horton places the speck of dust in a clover and subsequently loses it in a sea of clovers!! the Meet the Whos below.
It is a fanatical ride as we watched the kind-hearted Horton try to protect the speck of dust and the Whos who live on it. Between trying to convince others that the Whos exist and trying to find them in a sea of identical clovers, Horton also faces a double challenge – he was beseeched by the irresponsible and flighty Mayzie La Bird to guard her egg and then surreptitiously abandoned to take care of it alone!
Caught between a dust speck and his incubating egg, Horton is truly alone in the universe as he faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and ends up on trial.
But he is not really alone as it turns out. An infatuated Gertrude McFuzz, a plain girl-bird who has only one feather, never loses faith in him. She helps him finds the clover with the Whos in it and was by his side when the egg hatched. We shall not spoil the ending for you but if you have read the Dr. Seuss books, you will know the ending is a heartwarming one.
