Children wanting more playtime is not news. But there is a definite mindset change in parents wanting more time for their children to delve into creative activities and imaginative play as they believe these skills sets will help their children succeed in the future.
98% of the children surveyed by LEGO Singapore wants more time to play but griped that their playtime is often hijacked by school obligations such as homework (62%), tuition (45%) and extracurricular activities (30%). 55% of the 400 parents polled echo this desire for more time built into the working school day for them to explore their creative side.
The LEGO findings revealed that children (69%) felt more relaxed and happier after an hour of play. But parents report finding it challenging to make time for their children to play creatively, even though collectively, they agree that it is vital for their children to be creative and play imaginatively to be well-rounded for the future.
Today’s Children Need Different Skills
Parents recognize that “their kids will have different career paths from them” and that “85% of future jobs do not exist today.” Hence, creativity is critical for their child’s development and future success.
Ask any kid today what they want to be when they grow up and you will hear them aspiring to be you-tubers, film/video maker (30%), artists (29%), astronauts (19%) and even as a traveler (18%). These set of careers require different skills from tradition ambitions like doctors, lawyers, and bankers. It begs the question if our kids are adequately equipped with skills to help them succeed in their future.
These compelling affirmations from parents and their children prompted LEGO Singapore to initiate a campaign to encourage parents and children to explore creative play and imaginative creations.
