Birthday Party – Digital Gaming

The latest and newest trend for young boys these days is anything to do with digital.

So when I asked my son how he wanted to celebrate his birthday this year, he replied without hesitation that he wanted a digital birthday party!

Hmmm… I told him I will have to think about it.

Personally, I wasn’t too keen on it. My son and I have crossed swords many times over the use of digital gadgets in our household. Still, it was his birthday and this was how he wanted to celebrated his TENTH birthday. After some discussion with hubby, we decided that he could have his digital party with some ground rules.

First, we capped the invited guests to six to eight boys (including him). We were not sure if we could handle more than ten 10-year-olds.

Second, the boys have to do some physical activity before they begin playing on their digital games.

My son agreed to these terms. Party invitations were sent out. Invitations told his guests to bring their swimmers and their own iPad, iPhone or laptop.

Day of the Digital Birthday Party

The day of the party arrived. At 3pm, the young party guests arrived.

There was an exciting buzz in the air as the boys gathered. They immediately begin to chatter about the games they will play and one after another, they whipped out their iPad, iPhone or laptops from their bags.

When all the boys had arrived, we sent the boys swimming at our condo pool for an hour where they played pool games and water polo. I was pleasantly surprised that they complied without a fight. Either I was lucky or the peer presence had a large effect on them.

After an hour of swimming, they returned to the apartment to shower and change. Then the digital gadgets were whipped out and the party officially STARTED.

Digital Game

Hubby and I were impressed by how easy this party was. We were amused by the conversations taking place between these boys and the occasional shocking “not to be repeated” words they use.  Still, everyone was respectful and helpful. Most importantly, they WERE having fun. Boys way.

And dinner? Pizza, nuggets, drinks, and chocolate cake for desert. Boys are not fussy!

We even managed to throw in a movie. After four hours, the boys declared this was the best party they attended. We agreed. It was SOOOO easy.

Will you throw a digital party for your child?

If you don’t wish to hold a birthday party at home, here are some places you can go to that offer digital gaming concepts.

1) Bricks ‘N’ Cubes Cathay

2) St. James Cafe

3) Cool de Sac
