A very warm welcome to Universal Scribbles!
Universal Scribbles was conceptualized as a platform for me to pen my thoughts as a modern woman determined to balance family and career, as well as to document my parenting journey as my kids progressed through the different stages of childhood — baby, toddler, preschool, primary students, tweens, teenagers and eventually adults.
Having kids can transform you! They motivate you to WANT to become a better parent and person. My desire to do so led me to learn about Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and master it. But as a new parent, I was not ready to launch into life coaching yet. (I still have much to learn…)
When an opportunity opened up to work with AWARE to promote awareness against sexual harassment at the workplace, I grabbed it. It was a tremendously satisfying experience to launch the program for them in 2010. Even though I no longer work at AWARE, I continue to be one of their lead trainers against bullying at the workplace in the business community. Today, I also conduct many parenting workshops through the Singapore Family Education (SFE) and other independent channels.
In my previous position as the Editor of theAsianParent.com, I was introduced to the blogging sphere and in 2012, I launched my blog and a career in flexible work options.
Why the blog name “Universal Scribbles”
Because as a woman, a mom and a wife, we talk, blog and share about the same universal issues. We share similar guilt about work-life balance issues, struggle with identical parenting thoughts and express the same gratitude or angst over our relationships with our spouses.
Thus, these are the three pillars of the blog. Along the way, I’ve added travelling to the mix. And when I became qualified as a Family Life Educator and certified to be a Parent Coach by Champion Mindset Coaching Federation, I have also added coaching.
Who am I?
My name is Meiling. I am a mom, a writer, a blogger, a trainer/facilitator, and holder of many awesome job titles like chauffeur, sandwich-maker, chef-in-training and party planner.
I am married to a lovely man whose gentle nature, kind heart and humorous stories have earned him the moniker as “Mr. Care Bear” among my children’s friends. Our inter-racial union (I am Chinese and he is Indian), happened at a time when it was rare. Nowadays, you can find many inter-racial marriages like ours and of other races too.
We have two incredible children whom we adored tremendously. We try to practise good parenting skills (sometimes we do well, other times we falter) and our aim is to adopt best practices when it comes to raising our kids.
